For most undergraduate students, tuition fees do not become due immediately upon enrollment. Typically the government allows the student to defer the tuition fee payment until the student graduates and/or is able to maintain a pre-established income level. This type of loan is not dependent on the household income or your ability to pay. Simply applying is sufficient to qualify for either a full or partial loan. The loan is disbursed directly to the university and information on this process is available when you call the Student Finance phone number.
Loans for living expenses are also available through the government. There are two basic types of loans- those that are awarded based on need and those that are not. For the former there is a requirement of verification of income, whereas the latter are need-blind. Contrary to tuition loans, maintenance loans are payable to the student three times a year. Students from low income households who have a demonstrated financial need can generally qualify for a grant to assist with living expenses. The grant amount is variable and directly tied to the household’s income. These awards are not repayable, unlike loans. It is advisable to contact Student Finance customer service to learn about the income level limits for this type of funding before submitting an application.
Other circumstances may render one eligible for grants and financial aid. For example, having some sort of disability or mental health issue, non-traditional students such as working mothers, returning students, former military, etc. Exploring all options is the key to success and calling the helpline is the first staff in presenting your individual circumstances and determining eligibility for different financial aid options.
How to Apply
Normally, a parent or other relative is charged with providing validation for the applicant’s statement. Through the Student Finance website an account can be created for ease of use. The process only takes a few minutes and all you need is your personal information to input into the system. If you would like to request a paper application, call the Student Finance contact number. Occasionally proof of identity and verification of income make part of the application and the process may last an average of 6 weeks. Following approval you will receive a “loan declaration” which will outline the financial support for which the student is eligible for.
Household Income & Repayment
There is no clear cut-off for household income to determine eligibility for some types of student loans. By calling the Student Finance phone number, you can obtain specific information from the different possible sources of funding. You can also call to start the process of receiving more details and preparing for the actual application process. The repayment of loans begins normally after graduation and being gainfully employed. Depending on the income level upon joining the workforce the installments will be determined, as well as the repayment period.
