Who Should Pay National Insurance?

Do you need to pay national insurance? Not all individuals need to pay one and here is when you might need to start paying it.

A person has to pay National Insurance if:

  • He or she is over the age of 16
  • He or she earns over £155 on weekly basis
  • He or she is self-employed earning more than £5,965 annually

You do not have to pay for National Insurance once you reach the State Pension age. Only exception is for self-employed people eligible for Class 4 contributions. Income tax, though have to be paid. Contribution Rates

Class 1 National insurance is contributed by both the employee and employer. Class 1A and 1B national Insurances are paid by employers once a year on expenses and benefits at 13.8% for the current year. Employee’s contributions range from 12% to 2% depending on their wages and earnings. Employers can contribute a maximum of 13.8%. For self-employed people, there are 2 types of National Insurances to be paid – Class 2 rates if the annual income is over £5,965 and Class 4 if the gains are more than £8,060 annually. The rate for Class 2 is £2.80 each week and for Class 4 its stands at 9% on profits from £8,060 to £43,000. Above it, Class 4 National Insurance has to be paid at 2% on profits. The most common way to pay these two types of Insurance is by self-assessment.

How to Get a National Insurance Number
